Obtaining Your Flying License

Obtaining a Flying license these days is not as difficult as you might think, as long as you are physically fit enough to pass the required medical check, have the capacity to study and have a reasonable aptitude towards the skills required for flying you are on your way.

It is an important point to start by visiting an aviation certified doctor first and have a medical check done for the type of Flying License you will be applying for.  There are two reasons for this, firstly there is no point in paying for your first few lessons if you are not capable of receiving a medical certificate and secondly your student license will not be issued to you until you have successfully achieved a pass on your medical check.

There is two main ways you can achieve your Flying License, the most common is to enroll at a flying school either part time or full time.  If you are an older age student like I was, I enrolled part time and continued with my day job in order to cover the bills and learnt to fly in my spare time.  The other option here is to enroll full time and you will be taught both the theory and the practical on a full time basis.  This will set you back a lot of money and is usually done by those wanting to fly for an airline and are young enough to not yet have the responsibility of providing for a family.  I chose to do the study myself at home which saved me an enormous amount of money and still allowed me to achieve my goal of becoming an airline pilot.

Remember though that there are several options in your choice of a Flying License whether it be for commercial purposes or for recreation or sporting purposes.

The second option which is really only valid if you are interested solely in an airline career is the possibility to apply for a cadetship, this is where you are chosen by one of the major airlines and taught to fly inside the airlines own training system and in most cases a guarantee of a career within that company, this has many advantages regarding cost and saves you the trouble of looking for a job further down the track.  This however is only done if an airline Flying License is your chosen path.
